Will Bowman is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at University of California, Irvine. He joined UCI in 2019 after he was a Postdoctoral Associate in MIT in the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering. Prior to MIT he earned a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from Arizona State University in 2016. During graduate school, he was a Visiting PhD student at ETH Zürich in the Department of Materials. His BS is in Materials Science and Engineering from Arizona State University in 2012. He grew up between Oakland and Davis, California.

Bowman’s research focuses on understanding oxide ceramics, thin films, and nanomaterials for electrochemical energy conversion and storage, and recently carbon dioxide capture. The Bowman Lab performs multiscale materials characterization primarily using advanced and novel electron microscopy methods, as well as materials synthesis and testing. Bowman is a core faculty member in the Irvine Materials Research Institute (IMRI), which houses a world-class electron microscopy facility at UC Irvine.

His research has been funded by The National Science Foundation (NSF), The American Chemical Society (ACS), The Research Corporation for Science Advancement, Climate Pathfinders Foundation, The Microscopy Society of America, and the UC Irvine School of Engineering. He was a speaker at the Gordon Research Conference on Solid State Studies in Ceramics (2022).

He has received:

  • UC Irvine Inclusive Excellence Spirit Award (2023)
  • NSF CAREER award (2021)
  • ACS Doctoral New Investigator Grant (2021)
  • Scialog Fellowship in Negative Emission Science (2020-2023)
  • NSF Graduate Research Fellowship
  • Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship
  • NSF Graduate Research Opportunities Worldwide Award
  • Microscopy Society of America Presidential Scholar Award

He is a member of:

  • Microscopy Society of America (MSA)
  • Microanalysis Society of America (MAS)
  • Materials Research Society (MRS)
  • Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS)
  • National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)
