Coffee & Tea

We provide a full inventory of teas and coffee beans to lab members. Available equipment:

  • Buona Mattina Super Automatic Espresso, Latte, Americano and Cappuccino Machine with Whole Bean Grinder and Milk Frother, White

Advanced electron microscopy

We use the Irvine Materials Research Institute (IMRI).

IMRI TEMs

Material and ceramic design, synthesis and processing

We have facilitates for material design using wet chemical and solid state syntheses, ceramic powder processing, and high temperature ceramic sintering under controlled gasses. Available equipment:

  • Tube furnace with maximum temperature of 1500 °C
  • Two tube furnaces with maximum temperature of 1100 °C
  • Tube furnace with maximum temperature of 1000 °C
  • Box/muffle furnace with maximum temperature of 1000 °C
  • Linkam microprobe in situ optical microscopy heating station with maximum temperature of 1200 °C
  • Strongway 20-Ton Hydraulic Shop Press with hardened steel piston/dye assemblies for 24.5 mm and 13 mm diameter pellet and cold isostatic pressing under hydraulic oil submersion.

 

Thin film synthesis by pulsed laser deposition (PLD)

We have a new PLD system for atomic scale thin film growth. During deposition, a laser ablates a solid target and transfers the target material to a substrate where it solidifies as a thin film. UCI and external users are welcome to use this tool, please email Will with inquiries.

Electrochemical properties characterization

We make bulk, device, and thin film electrochemical measurements at varied temperatures and under controlled gas conditions.

Available equipment:

  • Huber Scientific Plug & Probe station for electrical measurement under controlled gas in tube furnace with maximum temperature of 700 °C
  • Linkam microprobe heating + 4-probe electrical station with maximum temperature of 600 °C under controlled gas
  • Biologic SP-200 Potentiostat
  • Gamry Reference 600+ Potentiostat/Galvanostat 5 MHz for EIS
  • Gamry Interface 1010E Potentiostat/Galvanostat/ZRA 2 MHz
  • MTI Quick Assembly Split Coin Cell ( 20mm ID) for Battery Material testing
